8/1/2015 0 Comments An excerpt From Selah's DiarySelah Brown February 10, 1859 I have been on the boat for 2 weeks now. It is very hard to write because I can not let the men know my secret. they will demand more money. I payed too much at the beginning. I will not have much when I get to Washington. It is so cold. the men are busy fishing the oysters. they are ugly things that the rich masters eat. It makes my insides turn to think of it. I am so glad that ma taught me to write but it is a heavy secret. I wonder who I will work for when I get to Washington. the oysters keep the men busy so I can write my story. It has been such a long journey. All there is is grass as far as I can see but it is on the sea. Very strange. the men take no notice of me because I put on boy clothes. I paid my coin and showed my freeman papers. they said we would get to Washington in 1 week now it is 2. when will I get there .....
